The headline, from the mouth of Mr. Lee who is the founder of Oaksterdam University sums up the feeling a lot of Californians have about Marijuana use. Yes, that’s right, Oaksterdam – like you didn’t know!
California is surprisingly close to legalizing Marijuana use within it’s borders; a move that could bring in much needed revenue to the recession-battered golden state. It has been calculated that the state could bring in billions of dollars in tax-generated revenues if it were to legalize and regulate Marijuana use. Although there is a huge divide among Americans and Canadians regarding the legalization of Marijuana, for the first time people are pushing hard for their law makers to take a stand instead of doing their best to leave the hot topic alone. All eyes are on California law makers tomorrow as they hold a hearing on this issue. So there could be a chance of a bill showing up on the Governator’s desk all too soon.

Perhaps the Obama administration’s ease on the ‘War on Drugs’ has added momentum to the efforts of Californians to push for legalization. However, the question still remains: will the Feds leave California alone if they decide to legalize Marijuana use? While California allows the use of Medical marijuana with a prescription, it hasn’t stopped the Feds from raiding dispensaries and clinics around the state, a move that has been backed up by the Supreme Court.

Will keep you posted on tomorrow’s hearing in California as well as new developments.

Update: 29-OCT-2009, Tom Ammiano who is the committee chairman is planning to push through a legalization bill after testimonies heard at the Weds hearing. Both sides of the debate were heard and it appears that he feels there is a good chance of the bill being successful after a vote next year.

This is how marijuana should be treated, same as beer and tobacco. People can make beer and grow tobacco, so theyt should be allowed to peaceably grow marijuana for their own use or to give as a gift. Profit selling should be regulated, just like in those other instances.

One has to wonder how the DEA will react if California should legalize and tax weed. Will the feds and their surrogates resort to stirring up trouble and outright lies as was done when marijuana was made illegal? Will they hold some kind of “funds” over the governor’s head? I do not put anything past them!
